We’ve Moved (Hosting Providers)

March 1, 2017 is a date that will stick with FlipQuiz for a long time – for both good and bad reasons. But, let’s back up for a moment.

On February 22, 2017, FlipQuiz went down for 24 hours. It ceased to load around 5pm and didn’t come back up until the following evening. It seemed – at least at first – that it was a temporary glitch on the server at MediaTemple and I worked with them throughout the 24-hour period to do what I could to help as they figured something out. Needless to say, there were some folks that were disappointed with the outage and so was I.

Exactly a week later (March 1), the site went down again.

This time, the problem seemed more severe. Though the host initially told me it was a server issue and that they could get me back up and running, I was feeling a little bit panicked Рmostly for you FlipQuiz users! I started a new account at a different hosting company and did something that was difficult at the time, but proved to be the right plan later РI wrote an honest email to every FlipQuiz user and sent it out that night via MailChimp to the whole list.

The flood of encouraging emails was amazing. So many of you took time out of your busy days to reply to that email and tell me that you were surprised that the site was built & maintained by one person and that you’d stick around after the site was back up. It was those words of kindness that made me realize how great the FlipQuiz community is.

After a few days of porting databases and files from one host to another (the site is now hosted on DigitalOcean), FlipQuiz was back up and running the following weekend! I was even able to recruit a friend/devops engineer/systems administrator to help secure the site and work on some performance tweaks!

The first round of emails letting folks know the site was back up went to PRO subscribers on Monday morning, with the second email following on Wednesday throughout the day.

Thank You

Thank you to the hundreds (yes, hundreds!) of people who took the time to write back and offer words of kindness and encouragement. I’m proud of the community of educators this site has become and look forward to serving you all the best I can in the future!
